Surprise!!!

I've always loved surprise parties...of any kind.  The planning, secret meetings, and suspense to see if it turns out to be an actual surprise.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to make a cake for a client's husband's surprise birthday party (see photo).  People flew in from around the country, the party location (Bethel Heights Vineyard) was amazingly beautiful and even the sun made it's appearance.  I wish I could have been there to see it all unfold, but was happy just to have been a part of it.

This Friday, an acquaintance of mine, who is pregnant, will be having a "Reveal the Sex" party for her friends & family.  She had her ultrasound yesterday and dropped off the results to me today.  The crazy thing is that not even she knows the sex of the baby!  When they cut into the cake, everyone will instantly know if it's a boy or a girl, depending on the inside color of the cake.  This is the 2nd time I've made a cake for this kind of party and I think it's such a fun idea.  It feels a little strange being the only one who knows if it's a boy or girl, but I'm so honored to be doing this cake.

Stay tuned for the results...

Spring Birds

It's Spring...my favorite season of the year.  The weather is becoming warmer, the trees are turning green and sweet little bird chirps welcome you in the morning.  I couldn't have been more ready to make this birdhouse cake and bluebird cupcakes.

Barber Shop Cake

The other day, my good friend Anne called me to do a special cake for her good friend and family barber, Daryl.  He finally retired this week and to celebrate, she and I decided on a barber shop pole cake.  It was more difficult than I thought it would be, and delivering it was a little scary, but I was happy with how it turned out.  Apparently a few of the barbers didn't realize it was a cake...a good sign in my book!

Girls' Weekend

Biggest challenge of the weekend was the guitar cake, but I think it turned out pretty well.

R2D2

One of the first movies I saw in the theater as a child was Return of the Jedi...little did I know that 30 years later I would be making an edible version of the robot, R2D2.  It's hard to say who was more excited about this cake...me, my husband (a big Star Wars fan) or the birthday boy, Landon.  This is now the requested cake from my own son, who will turn 5 next week.  I can't wait to make it again!
